Burslem beautician’s elegant move to help prom-goers amid cost-of-living crisis

Beautician Natasha Lesley has found a stylish way to help with the cost-of-living crisis by offering a free hairstyle to students heading to prom. The 29-year-old, who runs Tape Hair Salon in Burslem, was inspired to make the gesture after watching news stories from struggling families.

Now caring, Natasha, whose business is based at Beauty headquarters, hopes her gesture will not only help ease the financial pressure of prom planning, but also help young people look their best. Natasha, from Tunstall, who is a stylist and provides extensions, said: “Doing this is a way to help relieve the pressure to save money.

“I thought ‘what is it that costs nothing but my time?’, that’s when I thought about style. The ball means everything to these kids. It’s an experience for them, haven’t they? They’ve never done it before. It means the world to them.

Natasha works two jobs – and her boss for one of them gave her permission to finish early for the initiative. She said: “My boss let me go a few days early so I could go to the salon and do it. He really wants me to go do it.

“I have about six or seven appointments booked, which I guess is for six or seven schools. At the moment I still have places.

“I can do anything from beachy waves to tight curls to low curls, if they have curly hair and want to straighten it, I can do it. I ask them to send me an inspiration photo.”

Inside Beauty HQ staff offers hair, nails, pedicures, tanning, makeup, eyebrows, eyelashes, hair extensions and styling services. Natasha said, “YSM Beauty does half-price prom makeup, and All Things Pamper does half-price tan. They both have the cost of the product to cover.

“It would be nice if a barber got involved and helped the youngsters, that’s the only thing I can’t do.

Natasha got into the beauty industry as a dissatisfied customer. She said: “When I was a customer I felt like I was being overcharged so I decided to start my own business. I offer my hair at trade price rather than retail. I only use luxury hair.”

The cost of living crisis has also affected Natasha. She added: “I’m alone, working two jobs, living in a bedroom and struggling with my electricity. I’m scared to think about what families do and how they cope. I don’t think I know anyone who is comfortable right now.”
