Farmer’s Daughter Retrains to Open Shearing Shed

For this week’s Trader of the Week, we present to you The Shearing Shed in Rillington, run by Tracey Ireland.

We opened the hair salon on August 1, 2019

What does he sell/do?

It started out as just a hair salon but has expanded into all aspects of beauty, massages, esthetics, spray tans, ear and nose piercings,

Why is this company special?

Situated in the rural village of Rillington on the A64 with ‘parking on the doorstep’.

Our chic new salon is the perfect addition to the village, offering hair, nails and beauty at affordable prices.

We serve several villages in the region.

Since opening the business in 2019, the feedback from the local community has been very positive. Locals no longer have to travel 10 miles round trip to get a haircut and treatment. The lounge is also a hub for locals to have tea or coffee and chat and a listening ear.

How did he adapt during the Covid-19 crisis?

Covid has been an extremely difficult time for us as we were a brand new company when covid hit. At the time, we were still developing our customers and of course we are still a new company. Even though we’ve technically been open for two and a half years, technically due to covid it’s actually only a year and a half.

What is your favorite story/anecdote about this business/trader?

Tracey myself the owner was raised on a farm in East Heslerton where I lived for 25 years with my parents and brother. As a farmer’s daughter, I worked in agriculture for 20 years. At the age of 39, I decided to open a hair salon which I intended to just manage and employ staff. However, things don’t always go as planned and at 40, I decided to go into hairdressing. I then took a two-year hairdressing course which was extremely difficult due to covid, and a lot of e-learning took place. I am now doing Level 2 Barbering and passed my exams last week.

What do you like about your job at Ryedale?

When we have more than one client in the salon, as we are a village salon, more often than not the clients know each other and this creates a pleasant atmosphere as they chat happily, sometimes not having seen each other for years. . It’s nice to see people reunited as friends.
