Roots Hair Studio has a new look and location
Abbey Denius recently moved their Roots Hair Studio to a renovated facility.
For the past two years, Roots was located on Glenn Highway, but Denius had other ideas to make it more convenient and economical. Its new salon is located at 1316 Baird Ave., behind United Ambulance in Cambridge.
Denius bought the house she was renting and the nearby garage, which she would turn into her dream hair studio. Now she could walk to work in the morning and her son would always be nearby.
When she started renovating the garage, it had a dirt floor and had been used as a car storage. Jack Warne Construction stepped in to transform it into what Denius had envisioned.
Inside today it is sparkling clean and well organized.
His parents have been a big help, she said, helping to watch over her son when he’s not at school and just being there when needed. Denius and his son enjoy weekends together playing in arcades, jumping in trampoline parks, going swimming and stopping at his favorite spots for lunch. Being a mom is her top priority.
She named her business Roots from the start because “when you need your hair done, you have roots or regrowth that needs attention.”
For her, coming to the salon is not work, “I come here to have fun. We are like a big family and I love all of my clients, from children to the elderly.
There are four other women working alongside Denius. Each is an independent contractor and has their own unique skills. Above all, Denius likes styling hair and enhancing eyelashes. She completed her training at Tusco Beauty School in 2016 and started her own business in 2020.
Serenity Mallett, esthetician, was educated at Raphael’s School of Beauty Culture. “It’s my life. I like to make people feel good about themselves by adding a few touches of beauty,” she said. She soon heads to Siren Beauty Salon for training extra on microblading, ombre powder brows and lip blush tattoo.
Tracy Mourer, another Roots stylist, smiled as she remarked, “I like being my own boss. We all want people to feel good about themselves. Mourer was trained at Valley Beauty School.
Morgan Combs studied cosmetology at the Middle East Career and Technology Center and recently dabbled in hair extension. “I’m going to add several inches to her hair as well as some volume with these extensions,” she said. She also does gel nail polish.
